Cerebral Palsy Family Fun Day 2010

Hello to you and your family,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in our wonderful event and hope that you will help us spread the word throughout the Cerebral Palsy community that registrations for this fantastic day are now officially open!

We’d like to let you know a little more about the event and also explain the necessary information that will help when filling in the attached registration form.

Registrations are limited to 150 people and will be offered on a first in first served basis. Once registered please advise us if you can no longer attend, so that your space can be allocated to someone else.

We are grateful for the support of our major sponsor CCS Disability Action Canterbury and West Coast Region in the provision of this day. Due to further sponsorship from the CP Society and other local organisations we are able to offer this event free for all families. We would also like to thank JK Kids for their huge effort in providing us with our lovely glossy posters!

Now for the important stuff at hand…

Venue: QE11 Park Indoor Stadium

 

Purpose:

The Cerebral Palsy Family Fun Day 2010 is an opportunity for families to come together and experience a range of great activities that are accessible within our local community. We are also providing families the opportunity to hear from and engage with a range of International and local speakers with presentations and panel discussions of interest including:

  • Forum of International and local medical practitioners including Dinah Reddihough (Paediatrician from Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne) and James Blackman (Developmental Paediatrician, University of Virginia).
  • Parent-to-Parent is a support and information network for parents of children with special needs including Cerebral Palsy. Support is provided voluntarily by Trained Support Parents who have a child with the same or similar needs.
  • Combined session with Allenvale Transition Team, CCS Social Worker, and Counsellor –(topics to be confirmed)
  • Participation "Making good choices - Practical tips and ideas" presented by Gary Endacott (Disability facilitator for Ministry of Education) and Justin Muschamp (Sports Opportunity Advisor, Sport Canterbury)

As part of the registration families are asked to indicate questions and topics that they may like addressed.

The fun activities will run during the day from a variety of local groups, these will include:

  • Jump Jam will kick start the day for all
  • “Celebrate You” JK Kids Fashion Show will celebrate CP in style and give 15 lucky kids the opportunity to shine like the star they are!
  • Parafed Canterbury offers sport and recreation services, facilities and equipment for people with a physical disability. On the day Parafed will facilitate an opportunity to try a variety of activities like wheelchair rugby, boccia, parachute games, soccer, etc.
  • Hagley Theatre Company will perform a comical version of Hansel and Gretel for the children (this will also allow some parents to attend a presentation during this time or stay to enjoy the hilarities)
  • Southern Centre-Multi-Sensory Room situated at QE11 Park will hold tours during the day (please indicate your interest on the registration form.)
  • Mixed-Ability workshops from Jolt and StageOne-Hagley Theatre Company will give families the chance to explore their creativity and express themselves through a range of performance techniques, in a fun and positive environment.
  • Special Needs Toy Library will provide a selection of toys for use throughout the day in the under 5’s area
  • Big Fun with Michelle Leathart will provide a variety of fun gymnastic activities for children with mixed abilities

 

Volunteers will be available to assist with activities however parents remain responsible for the well-being, behaviour and actions of their children

Displays:

A variety of local organisations will be present on the day with helpful information on the services they provide.

Facilities:

QE11 Park is a multi-sport and leisure complex situated in Christchurch (www.qeiipark.org.nz). The leisure complex has a number of pools and other facilities, which families may choose, to access after the family fun day. This is not included as part of the registration.  The Ambrosia Deli (situated on the pool level) offers a range of food and drink.

Refreshments:

Complementary morning tea will be provided as part of the family fun day. Families are invited to bring their own food and drink to enjoy during a meet and greet lunch later in the day.

Toileting:

There are toilet facilities available near the indoor stadium accessible by stairs or lift. Temporary facilities for children and young people requiring changing tables will be arranged if required. Hoists will be available if required, please provide appropriate sling. Please indicate on the registration form any specific needs or concerns.
